It's kind of easy ending up skating along the boards since you want to stay as far away from the opposing defenders as possible. This however makes you an easy target for a checking defender. If you stick to the boards you're reducing the possible movement angle to 180 degrees instead of having the full 360. But if you put just a yard between yourself and the board, suddenly you doubble your choices and your chances to shake of the defender - which, if you manage to, might leave the slot wide open.

Very True But it really just depends on the Person Defending you I always use the boards to evade the Defenders but then i always switch it up and head towards the Center of the ice
One thing to remember is you can use a minor deke to get the intial Break on a defender. The game is just a bunch of reactions so stay on top of it and you will be fine.
When your Getting into the zone on the outside it makes the defenders Paranoid and when you gain it from the middle it makes the Goalies Paranoid
