I really suck at aiming myself. The thing I do wrong is that I allways move the LS 100% in the direction I want to shoot. This is because most online games are intense with very little time to take shots, so in an effort to take a quick shot I move both the LS and RS too fast and too hard. The trick to aiming is to aim soft. Aiming is sensitive. If you aim the left stick all the way left, your will miss the goal a lot of times (especially one-timers) unless you're controlling a player like Ovechkin. So if "all the way left" is 100%, then go about 75-80% left to get a shot that will stay inside the goal. Also note that when moving the RS to take a shot, moving it as fast as you can won't make for a harder shot or anything, but may affect your aim if you're not inside the "shoot margin" - 11-13 o'clock.
Also, on onetimers, you will hit the net a lot more if you wait with moving the RS until you've received the pass. I tend to move the RS right after sending the pass away with the result that I miss the puck all together from time to time.

Just for fun, I experienced wirst shot with Ovechkin in practice mode. I don't know about you AP but I cannot score with any consistency outside the hash. I can do it in a game with someone screening. Pure one on one... I just can't. What about you guys?
I admit it's hard. You have to make the goalie expose a part of the goal. This can be done by doing the unexpected. If you tend to shoot high, far post - try aiming under the goalies arm (9 o'clock), near post. Throw in a couple of dekes, before you take the shot.

In NHL 09 the curve shot was considered a glitchy way of scoring. What you did was to pull the puck over to the forehand side while skating in the direction of the backhand side, and then shot a wrister, aiming at the near post.
As you can see this resulted in the puck moving in a curve, thus it was dubbed the curve shot.
Now EA has fixed this glitch, but the idea of pulling the puck over to the forehand side while moving in the other direction is still useful when taking a shot, and it's something you see players do in real life too, especially when the goalies sight is obscured by players between him and the puck. It won't be a hard wrister but if you time the shot right the goalie won't se the puck until it's too late and by pulling the puck over to the forehand side, you will get the puck through on the side of the defender instead of trying to get the puck through between his legs.
I'm sorry I can't show you a longer clip but I exported the video from an online highlight and, as you know, you can't extend videos beyond the start and ending points of the highlight (EA should give you 2 extra seconds in the beginning of each highlight).
Here's another example of what you can achieve just by moving in the right way with the puck pulled out on the forehand side.

If you want to score you need to change your aim all the time. If you don't and for example allways aim high on the goalies stickside - the goalie's going to notice and expect it. Vary your aim and the goalie will guess wrong, making the wrong move from time to time, and thus increasing your chances to score.
Scoring is about forcing the goalie to leave an opening and then exploiting that opening.
In this clip I take two slapshots. First time, I aim low stickside and the goalie makes the save. Next time, taking a slapshot, the goalie guesses I'm going to aim low again and goes down with his pads, leaving the topshelf open.

Rebound Goals
The easiest way to light the lamp in NHL 10 is by putting the puck on net and having a teammate swoop in to clean up the rebound while the goalie is still recovering from the first save. Pulling off a successful rebound goal comes down to two factors:
Shot location
Teammate positioning
The shooter should aim low, far side post, to generate a rebound that bounces towards the middle or other side of the ice; however, knowing when to unleash the shot can be just as important as knowing where to place it.
Look at my earlier posts:
Wrist shots generate better rebounds
Rebounds
Ideally, you want to shoot the puck a stride or two after your teammate crosses the blue line. This way he will be hitting the crease right as the puck comes off the goalie’s pads. Once you get the timing down, the rebound becomes one of the easiest ways to create scoring chances in NHL 10.
Deflections/Screens
For whatever reason, the default "screen effect" in NHL 10 is significantly lower than what it was last year, so screen goals are much less prevalent overall than they were in NHL 09. To compensate, NHL 10 adds several new animations for deflections, including some that let you "bat in" pucks that are hanging in mid-air.
All the deflection animations are randomly generated, so all a player can do is to face the shooter (by holding the left trigger/L2) and keeping his stick in the shooting lane.
Forget about trying to screen the goalie -- deflections are NHL 10's tactic of choice in front of the net.
If you’re going for a deflection it’s important to take the shot when a team mate is positioned outside the shooting lane, so that the puck does not end up hitting him instead of his stick.

DekesLike many things in NHL 10, the effectiveness of your dekes depends largely on your player rating. Generally speaking, a player with a deke rating in the range of 80-85 should be able to fake a goalie out with one or two simple dekes. For players with lower ratings, more dekes are often necessary to get the goalie out of position and open up a shooting lane.
Remember to move both your body and your stick.
Look at my earlier deke posts.
One-Timers
NHL 10 removed the tape-to-tape passing from the earlier games which makes it a bit more difficult to generate one-timer goals in NHL 10, but if you can make the pass and your aim is right, the actual shot will go in more times than not.
A play like this will almost certainly light up the lamp.
When finishing the one-timer, try to aim your shot at one of three places:
Near-side top shelf
Five hole
Low opposite corner
What I wrote about onetimers in NHL 09 still applies: More on scoring in NHL 09
With proper positioning, the one timer makes for a great tactic against defenses that over pursue the puck carrier during an odd-man rush; however, if teams start playing the pass and guarding against the one-timer, the puck carrier might want to think about shooting low at the goalie’s pads to generate a "bank pass" for a rebound goal.
It may not always be pretty, but with goalies still being as superhuman as ever in NHL 10, sometimes you have to think like a video game to score in a video game.

Get into a high percentage scoring position before you shoot. If you are not able to get into a good position, look around for a teammate who may be open in a good position. If you can't see anyone, shoot low at the goaltender's feet, and go in for the rebound.

When playing NHL 10, try moving the RS as close to 12 o'clock as possible when you shoot. The quality of your shot will be much better if you end up with the RS at 12 then if you end up at 11.
